Chasing a target of 170, the Proteas’ batting line-up capitulated in the face of some excellent bowling with India seamer Avesh Khan picking up career-best figures of 4-18 in four overs.

The Proteas run-chase just never got going with only three batters reaching double-figures, Rassie van der Dussen top-scoring with 20 while opener Quinton de Kock hit 14 and debutant Marco Jansen 12.

The home side’s bowlers were on top from the onset and spinner Yuzvendra Chahal (2-21 in four overs) and Axar Patel (1-19) contributed in the wickets column.

Earlier, India’s batting innings had a slow start but eventually they made their way to a total of 169/6 in 20 overs.

The hosts had initially limped to 57-3 in the first 10 overs after Proteas captain Temba Bavuma had won the toss and elected to field.

Hardik Pandya and Dinesh Karthik combined for a partnership of 65 off just 33 balls as India went to total that would prove to be enough on a two-paced pitch.

Pandya struck 46 off 31 balls while Karthik hit 55 off 27 deliveries as the Proteas conceded a staggering 73 in the last five overs of the innings.

India have now won the last two matches to level the series at 2-2 with the decider set to be played in Bangalore on Sunday, 19 June.
