The toss has been delayed due to rain ahead of the second One-Day International (ODI) between England and the Proteas at Old Trafford in Manchester.

As the world of cricket bid a partial farewell to England’s all-round talisman Ben Stokes, who retired from playing in ODIs, South Africa hit the ground running in their all-format 2022 tour of the UK with a convincing 62-run win at Chester-le Street on Tuesday.

It was the first of three ODIs being played before an ensuing five-match T20I series and three Tests later next month.

The teams now travel down to the hallowed Old Trafford ground in Manchester, where on Friday the visitors look to extend their lead in this series as well as their 2-1 lead in the head-to-head register at this venue.

Players to watch

The powerhouse that is England all-rounder Liam Livingstone has an overall ODI average of 30.28 with the bat, but that has halved to just 14.80 across his last five innings. The four wicket haul of express seamer Anrich Nortje in the first ODI was the second of his career, and began correcting his awful away bowling average which now stands at a hefty 44.80.

Stat attack

– The average first innings ODI score at Old Trafford in the last 10 matches (since the start of 2019) is 294, with eight of those 10 games won batting first.

– Jason Roy is just 60 ODI runs away from the 4 000 milestone. If and when he gets there, he will become the 12th English batter to achieve that goal.

– Quinton de Kock has struck 96 runs from 92 balls bowled by Adil Rashid in ODIs at an average of 48.00.

– Joe Root has scored 30 runs off 31 balls delivered by Lungi Ngidi in ODIs without being dismissed.

– Going at just 4.74 rpo across 195.1 ODI overs, Keshav Maharaj has the lowest economy rate of all bowlers on either side.
