Stand-in captain David Miller was delighted with the allround performance from the Proteas as they beat England in the second T20I to level their three-match series.

Miller felt the Proteas were sound in each area, taking their catches, bowling well and batting smart.

The skipper said that South Africa were keen to maintain left-right combinations, helping them nullify the England left-armers.

Four dropped catches in the first match gave England the impetus but the Proteas responded with a much better effort including an absolute screamer of a catch by Keshav Maharaj.

Speaking after the match Miller said: “We’ll take a win, a great turn-around tonight, we took our catches and the batters were phenomenal. Great performance. We had a few meetings after sleeping on it last night. Chuffed with the bowlers, they made it easier for me by picking up wickets all the way through. I was juggling and if it had gone deep…. but the guys were superb. Our left-right combinations were very tactical… one-one, one to go.”

England captain Jos Buttler lamented his team’s failure to make the most of their starts as they were bowled out.

“We did well at the end, we could have restricted them better in the middle. The wicket played well so though [207] was par. Rilee got in and it looked tough to stop him scoring, we had guys like myself who got starts but didn’t make the matchwinning contribution. Consistency-wise what can we do better. The Ageas Bowl will be a great decider.”

Rilee Rossouw was able to get on top of Chris Jordan, a feat not easily achieved but was disappointed to miss out on his hundred, ending on 96 not out having swung and missed at the final ball of the innings.

“You have to try to be proactive, Jordan bowls world-class yorkers so sometimes you have to try something silly and hope it comes off,” Rossouw.

“I am very proud to be selected again, and coming off the Somerset run I felt could. I tried my best for three figures but we got the W.”
