The Proteas bowling attack proved irresistible at Lord’s as England failed to mount a serious challenge after bowling South Africa out for 326 earlier in the day.

South Africa won by an innings and 12 runs having bowled England out for 149 in their second innings.

Both Marco Jansen and Keshav Maharaj fell short of what would have been deserved half centuries but the Proteas tail had done enough to give their side a 161-run first innings lead.

England hadn’t been able to get on top of the Proteas pace attack at any point in the Test and their second innings turned into a procession.

However, it was Maharaj who got the ball rolling when he was deployed with a reltively new ball and managed to trap both Zak Crawley and Ollie Pope leg before.

When Lungi Ngidi had Joe Root nick off to Aiden Markram in the slips the writing was on the wall.

There was some lower-order resistance when Stuart Broad and skipper Ben Stokes put on 55 for the seventh wicket.

Anrich Nortje got the crucial wickets of Alex Lees, Jonny Bairstow and Ben Foakes but the wickets were spread about the Proteas attack.

Despite pre-match talk being dominated by Bazball it was the Proteas who dictated the pace of the match.

Credit must go to Dean Elgar for his excellent captaincy backed up by contributions from just about the entire XI.

Jansen’s roar after castling the England No 11 James Anderson likely paints a picture of how the Proteas diehards will feel after this Test match.

The performance had everything you’d expect from a Proteas side in the image of ‘Bulldog’ Elgar.

Now the question becomes whether they can keep this up, claim the series and just about clinch a place in the World Test Championship final.
