Marizanne Kapp was once again the heroine for South Africa as she led the team to a thrilling two-wicket win against New Zealand in Thursday’s Women’s World Cup match in Hamilton.

The result sees South Africa move level with Australia on eight points at the top of the table.

It’s another massive victory for the Proteas Women as they continue to build real belief that they can go on to win this ICC event, although they certainly did it the hard way against New Zealand.

A superb 93 from New Zealand captain Sophie Devine had led the Kiwis to a competitive total of 228, with Shabnim Ismail the bowling standout for the Proteas Women as she recorded figures of 3-27, while Ayabonga Khaka also impressed after taking 3-31.

The key turning point in the game was the late collapse from New Zealand, who were 198-4 at one stage in the 41st over, but then collapsed to 228 all out with 13 balls of the innings still remaining.

South Africa once again had to rely on superstar Laura Wolvaardt to give them a strong start, with the opener scoring 67 off 94 balls, while Sune Luus produced an important knock of 51.

A batting collapse from the Proteas Women led to a nervy finish, but Marizanne Kapp kept her cool – hitting two brilliant boundaries late in the game – as she led South Africa across the line, finishing unbeaten on 34.

Earlier this week, South Africa had earned another late ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2022 win as they defeated defending champions England by three wickets with four balls remaining in Tauranga.

England were rescued from a poor start by a 107-run partnership from Tammy Beaumont and Amy Jones before Marizanne Kapp fought back with her first international five-wicket haul to set her side 236 to win.

Kapp followed Laura Wolvaardt’s lead with the bat to set up a nail-biting finish before Trisha Chetty hit the winning run for South Africa’s first World Cup win over England in 20 years.
