South Africa suffered a 177-run defeat at Old Trafford at the hands of England, who clinched the 4 match series 3-1.

It is a series South African players and fans will quickly want to forget, although the former will be better served with some tough introspection, as they went down to the Poms in a second successive test series, after having lost 2-1 at home the last time these two sides did battle.

Captain Faf du Plessis admitted during the post-match presentation that inconsistency throughout cost his side the series; “The last SA team which was here had a very good series and became number 1. We couldn’t match England in consistency”.

This particular defeat marks England’s first home series victory against the Proteas in 19 years.

This is how Twitter reacted:

The beginning of an era.

I would have preferred this series ending with a rant from him about KP.

Could have gone either way.

Easy mistake to make.

The calm…

…before the storm.

It was just a little too late.

Desperate times.

Called it!

At least Morkel stood, err… tall above the rest…

… but Moeen did pip him by more than just a hair.

Looking forward to the most highly anticipated 3rd/4th play-off fixture. Also Known As “The Ashes”

Bring our boys back home!

And coming home they are. South Africa’s next test series is at home against Bangladesh, starting on 28 September.
