There is no doubt that the inaugural season of the SA20 was a resounding success in virtually every regard, with the Sunrisers Eastern Cape eventually walking away as champions.

Last year, organisers of South Africa’s newest cricket competition had already confirmed a record-breaking R70m in prize money – the biggest prize pool in the history of franchise cricket in this country.

League commissioner Graeme Smith had also explained how the SA20 had secured a 10-year broadcast deal with India’s Viacom18 and a multiyear sponsorship with Betway.

Smith said tournament organisers worked hard to offer an unprecedented first-season prize-money incentive.

“This is a first for South African cricket. We have never had this type of competitive incentive in our domestic cricket and it is a further indication of SA20’s ambitions to positively affect SA cricket,” he said.

When reflecting on the success and lucrative nature of the SA20, the captain of the Pretoria Capitals, Wayne Parnell, said it was a reflection of big things to come.

“I think it’s a great development for some players,” said Parnell. “One has to remember that some of the guys were only bought at their base price. The bonus might end up being more than their salary. Financially it’s obviously great for players.”
