Laura Wolvaardt joins Gujarat Giants in Women’s Premier League

Protea Laura Wolvaardt is replacing the injured Beth Mooney at the Gujarat Giants in the inaugural Women’s Premier League (WPL) in India.

Protea Laura Wolvaardt is replacing the injured Australian, Beth Mooney at the Gujarat Giants in the inaugural Women’s Premier League (WPL) in India.

The international place in the WPL was opened up as Mooney injured her knee in their opening match against the Mumbai Indians. Having performed well during the recent T20 World in South Africa, which Australia won, she was handed her first high-level captaincy at the Gujarat Giants. While out injured she has been replaced as captain by Sneh Rana before Mooney officially retired from the tournament.

At the WPL auction in February Laura Wolvaardt now gets a golden opportunity. Having been the top scorer at the Women’s T20 World Cup she is currently in good form. More importantly, she has proved that she can perform under pressure. Her inclusion in the WPL also means that there is now a South African member of each of the five squads.

At the time of her call up she was playing in Pakistan for the Super Women. The Pakistan Cricket Board’s currently hosting Women’s League exhibition matches. She only made one appearance for the Super Women scoring 53* not out in 36 deliveries as they beat the Amazon’s by eight wickets. Protea’s ICC Women’s T20 World Cup captain, Sune Luus will fill her spot in Pakistan.

Gujarat Giants

The team is currently fourth on the log having only won one out of their three matches thus far. They next take on the Delhi Capitals at 16:00 CAT on Saturday, 11 March.
