The IPL has probably never had more South African interest but fans will not be able to watch any of the games live this season.

The 2023 edition of the IPL kicks off on Friday, 31 March at 16:00 (SA time) when the Gujarat Titans host the Chennai Super Kings in Ahmedabad. And while David Miller will be missing the game due to Proteas duty, no fans in South Africa will be able to watch.

Not that game nor when he returns. This shocking news was revealed by pay TV broadcaster SuperSport on the eve of the first ball.

“SuperSport previously held broadcast rights to the Indian Premier League (IPL),” SuperSport said in a statement.

“Commercial discussions with the rights holder for the next cycle of rights have unfortunately been unsuccessful and SuperSport will therefore not broadcast the IPL as of this year’s edition.”

The league, which began in 2008, has grown to be the world’s richest cricket tournament and a huge revenue earner for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

This year for the first time there was a women’s version – won in front of a packed house by Mumbai Indians.
