Williams and Tiripano keep Zimbabwe hopes of Test series victory alive

Zimbabwe held a slender eight-run lead at stumps on day four but had looked set to slump to an innings defeat earlier in the day with Rashid Khan running rampant.

Zimbabwe skipper Sean Williams scored his second hundred of the Test series against Afghanistan and shared a 124-run unbroken eighth-wicket stand with Donald Tiripano to keep hopes of a rare Test series win alive.

At stumps on day four of the second and final Test in Abu Dhabi on Saturday 13 March, Zimbabwe held a slender eight-run lead but had looked set to slump to an innings defeat earlier in the day with Rashid Khan running rampant.

Khan had claimed his fourth Test five-wicket haul and was one scalp away from taking ten in the match but he would be frustrated by Williams and Tiripano.

Tiripano brought up his maiden Test half century while Williams notched his third Test hundred during what could be a match saving and ultimatel series winning stand.

There is still a lot of work for the pair to do and the will need to withstand a refreshed and renewed Afghanistan attack on the morning of day five.

Zimbabwe won the first Test with Williams named man of the match in a low-scoring affair.

Afghanistan put themselves in charge of the second Test as Hashmatullah Shahidi became the nation’s first double-centurion in Test cricket and they posted 545/5 declared.

After Zimbabwe were bowled out for 287, Afghanistan enforced the follow-on leaving the tourists needing to just about bat out the final two days of the Test to clinch a series win.

Zimbabwe’s top-order gave way to the wiles of Khan and they slipped to 124 for 7 but as Williams settled the leg-spinner began to offer scoring opportunties and he brought up his hundred and edged the Chevrons into the lead.
