Proteas beat Sri Lanka to level series in rain-hit ODI

A string of rain delays could not prevent the Proteas from putting one over on Sri Lanka and levelling the ODI series at the Premadasa Stadium on Saturday 4 September.

Keshav Maharaj took over the Proteas captaincy and won his first toss as skipper electing to bat first.

Janneman Malan justified that decision as he blazed to his third ODI hundred with great support from Aiden Markram (21) and Reeza Hendricks (51), while Heinrich Klaasen’s cameo of 43 off 27 balls ensured the Proteas would reach 283 for 6. Debutant George Linde (9*) and Wiaan Mulder were the men at the crease at the death as a flurry of late wickets hampered their progress.

However, needing a run-a-ball from the start, Sri Lanka quickly found themselves chasing the game in their innings.

Kagiso Rabada tore into the Lankan top-order removing first ODI centurion Avishka Fernando and Bhanuka Rajapaksa in the fifth over.

SHAMSI DOES THE DAMAGE

Tabraiz Shamsi would account for the Sri Lankan middle-order but not before some staunch resistance from Charith Asalanka, who scored his second fifty of the series, his wicket would trigger a collapse that took all the tension out of the contest.

A further rain delay shortened the Sri Lankan innings to 41 overs but Chamika Karunaratne would give them faint hopes with a gem of a little innings.

Maharaj should have had the wicket of Dusmantha Chameera, who was dropped by Wian Mulder on the boundary. The skipper would strike the killer blow as Karunaratne (36) chopped on looking to whip a wide delivery onto the onside. Chameera would follow soon after becoming Shamsi’s fourth victim and bringing together the final pair for the hosts.

When Akila Dananjaya holed out for 3 the Sri Lankan innings was over and the Proteas had won by 67 runs.
