IPL back on South African screens thanks to last-minute deal

SuperSport have responded to an overwhelming outcry against the loss of TV rights for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) by securing a last minute deal.

Lovers of the IPL in South Africa will now be able to watch all 74 matches live on SuperSport.

With 17 South African players set to compete in what has become a staple of the cricket calendar, the decision to let the rights go caused some consternation.

However, SuperSport and DStv announced that a deal had been done on Friday 31 March just hours before the opening fixture.

“Following updated conversations with the rights holder, DStv can confirm that all Indian Premier League matches in 2023 will be broadcast on SuperSport,” read a statement from DStv.

“Your World of Champions SuperSport reached a commercial agreement with the rights holders to broadcast the IPL, starting today.”

The whole shebang

The entirety of the 2023 IPL will be live on SuperSport, so subscribers can track their favourite players and teams 

“All 74 matches of the 16th tournament will be broadcast live,” DStv declared.

SuperSport have broadcast every single match in the IPL and that streak will now continue.

“We are very happy to have reached an agreement to continue our partnership with the IPL that extends back to the inaugural event in 2008,” said Marc Jury, chief executive of SuperSport.”

The opening fixture, between the Gujarat Titans and Chennai Super Kings, will be broadcast live on DStv channel 212 from 16:00.
