Hashim Amla: 10 things you didn’t know on his 38th birthday!

Former Proteas star batsman Hashim Amla turns 38 today.

Amla was a mainstay in South Africa’s batting line-up from 2004 to 2019 in all three formats of the game and is sorely missed to this day.

1. He was born on 31 March 1983 in Durban.

2. Amla attended Durban High School which is also the alma mater of Lance Klusener and Barry Richards among others.

3. His elder brother Ahmed Amla was also a professional cricketer at the Dolphins.

4. Hashim Amla played 124 Tests, 181 ODIs and 44 T20Is for the Proteas between 2004 and 2019.

5. His highest Test score of 311* against England at The Oval in 2012 is the only triple century ever scored by a South African batsman

6. He finished with averages of 46.64, 49.46 and 33.60 in Tests, ODIs and T20Is

7. Amla played for the Dolphins and Cape Cobras in South Africa as well as the Durban Heat in the Mzansi Super League and the Kings XI Punjab in the IPL.

8. Amla made his Test debut at Eden Gardens in Kolkata against India in November 2004, becoming the first South African of Indian descent to represent the Proteas, scoring 24 and 2 on debut. India won the Test by eight wickets.

9. Amla scored a duck and 32 in his final Test for the Proteas in Port Elizabeth against Sri Lanka in February 2019. Coincidentally, Sri Lanka won the Test by eight wickets.

10. He is married Sumaiyah and the couple have two children.
