DLS sees India beat Ireland by 5 runs in Women’s T20 World Cup

Rain ended Ireland’s innings early as they lost to India by 5 runs (DLS) in their final Women’s T20 World Cup pool game in Gqeberha.

Unfortunately for Ireland, rain ended their innings early as they lost out to India by 5 runs in their final Women’s T20 World Cup pool game in Gqeberha.

India won the toss and opted to bat first.

India bat at run rate of 7.75 an over

Opener and Player of the Match, Smriti Mandhana top scored with 87 off 56 deliveries as she anchored the Indian innings. Her opening partner Shafali Verma chipped in with 24 runs off 29 balls and did Jemimah Rodrigues with 19 off 12. India ended the Innings with 155/6.

Irish captain Laura Delany took 3 wickets for 33 runs. Orla Prendergast took 2/22 and Arlene Kelly picked up 1/ 28 on an overcast field.

Ireland battle the DLS

In a unashamedly female centric tournament like the Women’s T20 World Cup it was inevitable that some men would make their way onto the scoresheet. Enter, Duckworth Lewis Stern the mathematical practice that decides what an appropriate score is at any point in a cricket match, provided a minimum number of overs has been bowled, factoring in overs, runs and wickets fallen.

With the overhead conditions gloomy Ireland were needing to score quickly without loss from the get go. Gaby Lewis scored and unbeaten 32* off 25 and Laura Delany made 17* off 20 before the players were called off the field due to rain. Ireland were 54/2 at the time with a target for the 9th over 60 runs. As the rain continued the match was called and India took the game by 5 runs.

Renuka Singh took one wicket for 10 runs in her two overs. The other wicket was a result of a run out.

What next in the Women’s T20 World Cup?

Ireland head home, regroup and rebuild for the next encounter. India join England and Australia in the semi-finals. South Africa are hoping to take the fourth spot currently held by New Zealand should they beat Bangladesh on Tuesday, 21 February.
