Australia’s Mitchell Starc celebrates the final wicket during the ICC Cricket World Cup group stage match at Lord’s, London.

Australia’s Mitchell Starc may not have made it to the Cricket World Cup final, but his record for most wickets in a single tournament remains intact.

The left-arm quick surpassed countryman Glenn McGrath’s mark of 26 wickets – which the legendary seamer set in his final tournament in 2007 – when he removed England’s Jonny Bairstow in the second semifinal at Edgbaston on Thursday.

So, it goes without saying that Starc occupies the top of the leader board when it comes to which bowler has taken the most wickets in the 2019 Cricket World Cup.

The lanky New South Welshman finished the tournament head and shoulders above the rest with 27 scalps.

By the time England set about chasing New Zealand’s 241-8 in the final at Lord’s, he was some distance away from his nearest competitor who, like him, cannot possibly add to his tally.

The man in question is, of course, Bangladesh’s Mustafizur Rahman, otherwise known as “The Fizz”, who took 20 wickets in what was one of his country’s better displays on the biggest stage.

Rahman is tied with England’s Jofra Archer at 20 scalps, and the duo could be surpassed by the New Zealand pair of Lockie Ferguson and Trent Boult, depending on how they fare in defending what the Black Caps batsmen managed to set the host nation.

At the innings break, the two Kiwis were at 18 and 17 wickets respectively, just below the unorthodox Jasprit Bumrah from India.

They are separated by England’s Mark Wood, who took the big wicket of Ross Taylor in the final to take his tally to 18.

The Pakistan pair of Mohammed Amir and teenage sensation Shaheen Shah Afridi are also in the top ten, which is brought up by Australian speedster Pat Cummins.
