Team SA picked up another four medals on Saturday at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

Boxers Simnikiwe Bongco and Philokuhle Mnguni lost their semi-final bouts, but took home bronze.

Wrestling’s Steyn de Lange won silver, while 400m hurdler Zeney van der Walt won bronze.

That takes Team SA’s total medals to 26 – 7 gold, 8 silver and 11 bronze.

That haul is good enough for eighth place in the current overall medal table.

TEAM SA COMMONWEALTH GAMES RESULTS – SATURDAY

ATHLETICS
Men’s hammer throw, final: 
Tshepang Makhethe finished seventh with a throw of 58.76m and Allan Cumming finished 13th with a throw of 63.13m. Gold was won by England’s Nick Miller with 76.43m
Men’s 1 500m, final: 
Ryan Mphahlele finished 11th in 3:34.66, which was a personal best time
Women’s 400m hurdles, final: BRONZE! Zeney van der Walt finished third and took bronze in a personal best 54.47sec.

BOXING
Men’s middleweight, semi-final: BRONZE! 
Simnikiwe Bongco lost to Callum Peter (Australia). Bongco lost the first round 10-9 on all five judges’ scorecards as Peters came forward. Bongco landed his best punches, but the Australian kept coming forward. In the second round, Peters continued to do the pressing and it was Bongco who was cautioned for holding as the Australian took the second round, too. Bongco needed a stoppage in the third round (behind 2017 on four judges’ cards) but was was being outworked in round three as well. Peters was a comfortable points-winner.

Women’s featherweight, semi-final: BRONZE! Philokuhle Mnguni lost 5-0 on points to Michaela Walsh (N Ire). All five judges gave all three rounds to Walsh.

HOCKEY
Men’s semi-finals: India 3 South Africa 2
An incredible display from South Africa against the world No 3s who went up 2-0 by half-time. South Africa refused to lie down though made it 2-1 before, late in the fourth quarter, they substituted the keeper to allow for an extra outfielder. India scored during this time but remarkably South Africa had the final say. They will play England for the bronze medal on Monday.
