Coetzee could end first year in charge with a worse record than Heyneke Meyer

The pawpaw and the fan could make friends soon.

If Allister Coetzee thought things were bad after the humiliation the Springboks suffered at the hands of New Zealand over the weekend, it could get worse.

Coetzee needs to find a way to beat England, Italy and Wales during the end of year tour in order to have seven wins out of 12 in the calendar year. That would put him level with Heyneke Meyer’s record after his first year in charge.

As Sport24 points out, though, even if Coetzee manages a clean sweep of the European tours, he would still behind Meyer for number of losses. Meyer managed two draws and three losses in his first year.

So far under Coetzee, South Africa have lost five out of nine matches.

Sport24 also points out another stat that’s going against Coetzee. Tries scored is at 19 vs 15 (in favour of Meyer) and tries conceded an eye watering 27 (Coetzee) compared to 15 (Meyer) when the coaches’ first nine matches in charge are compared.
