PSL goal of the season

Hlompho Kekana of Mamelodi Sundowns celebrates his goal.

After their CAF Champions League exit was followed by an uncharacteristic slump in form, Mamelodi Sundowns are finally hitting their stride and will look to further confirm this as they travel to PE to meet Chippa United on Saturday.

This will be their second foray into the Eastern Cape in the space of a month as they earlier clashed with the same opponent in East London some 300km away from Saturday’s venue, the Nelson Mandela Bay stadium in the Telkom Knockout.

That did not end too well for the visitors as they were knocked out of the competition on the very first hurdle, going down 1-0.

The cup defeat would be their third on the trot, following home losses to Kaizer Chiefs and AmaZulu, but they would bounce back with a rather convincing 3-1 away victory against Orlando Pirates. They followed that up with another away triumph against defending champions Bidvest Wits, beating them 2-0 via a Khama Billiat brace.

The good recent form puts them firmly in the running for league honours as they currently sit fifth on the log just three points behind log leaders Baroka FC, despite having played three games less. This is mostly thanks to the fact that they have also registered more wins than any other side in the league with five, while Baroka and fourth-placed Bloem Celtic have four each.

Head to head

With the hosts relatively new in the top flight – having made their PSL debut in 2012 – the two sides have met eight times in the league with half of those clashes going in favour of Mamelodi Sundowns. The other four have produced no winner as the teams had to share the spoils.

Chippa’s League Cup victory stands as their only victory against Pitso Mosimane’s men.

Starting XI

Chippa United – TBA

Mamelodi Sundowns – TBA
