Manchester City have a mental and physical mountain to climb in their Champions League quarter-final second leg against Liverpool.

Pep Guardiola’s must overturn a 3-0 deficit from their first leg at Anfield a week ago.

Jurgen Klopp’s swashbuckling side blew City away in a supreme first half salvo.

Mohamed Salah put Liverpool ahead in the blink of an eye.

The prolific Egyptian dovetailed with Roberto Firmino before sweeping in from six yards in front of the Kop.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain then took control in the centre and fizzed his shot inside the left-hand post to beat Ederson.

And Sadio Mane made it three when he headed in Salah’s teasing cross.

There wasn’t even half an hour on the clock.

City could have licked their wounds and then some by beating rivals Manchester United to seal the English Premier League title at the weekend.

Vincent Kompany and Ilkay Gundogan looked to have accomplished just that by giving the hosts a 2-0 half time lead at the Etihad.

But a Paul Pogba double and another from Chris Smalling after the break spoiled the party in breathtaking fashion.

It’s the first time any Guardiola side has conceded three goals in consecutive matches.

By contrast Liverpool had earlier played out the most sedate Merseyside derby with Everton in living memory.

A goalless draw and a chance for Salah to put his feet up will do just fine for Klopp and Co.

But hold on to your hats if City manage to score first on Tuesday, as this one may not be as straightforward as it seems.

Manchester City team and injury news

City are hopeful over the availability of star man Sergio Aguero, after the Argentine started on the bench at the weekend.

John Stones and Danilo are unlikely to feature after sitting out training on Monday.

Liverpool team and injury news

Salah, Andy Robertson and Alberto Moreno all stand a chance of taking part in the big one.

But Klopp definitely won’t have midfield duo Emre Can and Jordan Henderson at his disposal at the Etihad.
