Caster Semenya, winner of two Olympic gold medals and a three-time 800m world champion, will line up in the women’s 3 000m event which is also the World Athletics Continental Tour Challenger, with the 31-year-old athlete looking to prove she is still a dominant force on the track.

Caster Semenya may not have things all her own way

She might not have it all her own way, however, against a field which also includes long-distance specialists Kesa Molotsane and Glenrose Xaba, who will hope to show a turn of speed after joining Semenya’s training group.

With middle-distance events taking centre stage at the coastal meeting in the Mother City, national 800m champion Prudence Sekgodiso will be hard to beat in the women’s 1 500m race, as the 20-year-old prospect steps up in distance.

In the men’s metric mile, rising star Ryan Mphahlele will turn out against a field which also features South African 800m champion Tshepo Tshite.

Having won the women’s 400m race in the ASA Grand Prix series opener in Mangaung earlier this week, former world junior champion Zeney van der Walt will be eager to carry her form into her specialist 400m hurdles event in Cape Town.

The entry lists also include the likes of African record holder Antonio Alkana in the 110m hurdles, former World Athletics Championships finalist Victor Hogan in the discus and two-time Olympian Rocco van Rooyen in the javelin.

Sibusiso Matsenjwa of Eswatini, winner of the 100m in the Mangaung leg of the ASA Athletics Grand Prix Series, will be up against local prodigy Benjamin Richardson and Germany’s Steven Muller in the men’s 200m.
