Euphoria is in the air in South Africa. We have been elected to host the 2023 Netball World Cup.

On Thursday, South Africa won the bid to host the 16th Netball world competition, a monumental achievement, to say the least, seeing that we have already hosted a football and rugby world cup.

Where will the 2023 Netball World Cup be held?

Even better — and expected — is that the entirety of the tournament will be held in the Mother City.

As reported by IOL News, Cape Town and Auckland, in New Zealand, were the two host cities under consideration.

How South Africa won the bid over New Zealand

The International Netball Federation’s (INF) Bid Evaluation Committee had a tough task of considering the bid presentations the two nations made in Singapore in 2018.

The INF President, Honourable Molly Rhone, indicated that South Africa deserved this as an appreciation for all that the country is doing for Netball.

“The INF Board decided that the significant investment that the South African Government and Western Cape were prepared to make over the next four years in netball facilities and coaching programmes in South Africa, the African continent and beyond would deliver a greater impact on the development of global netball.

“It is an exciting time for netball right now.  Our sport is growing in popularity at an unprecedented rate throughout the world,” Rhone exclaimed.

A first in history for Africa

This is the first time in history that the Netball tournament will be held in the African continent.

Not only will this be a massive economic boost for the Western Cape and, South Africa as a whole, but it is also a massive portfolio feature for the country’s ambition in hosting world-class, global events.

Netball South Africa took to Twitter to share the fantastic news after the INF had revealed the winning bidder.
