Lightweight boxer Simiso Buthelezi, who shockingly lost his bearings after a bout on Sunday, has tragically died.

Buthelezi was involved in a shocking incident during a bout this past weekend, with footage showing the talented boxer strangely starting to shadowbox in the corner of the ring, and with his back turned to his opponent.

In the fight against Siphesihle Mntungwa in Greyville, Buthelezi doesn’t appear to have suffered a heavy blow before the incident, but inexplicably goes on to lose his bearings before the bout was quickly called off.

It was later reported that he had been placed in an induced coma in a Durban hospital following the World Boxing Federation All Africa Lightweight fight.

Doctors said they believed there could be a blood clot on the brain due to a blow to the head, presumably suffered at some point during the bout, or possibly in the past.

“We discovered that he bled on the brain and sadly his condition does not allow the doctors that are treating to operate at the moment due to the condition,” doctor Buyi Mabaso-Dlamini told Sowetan Live on Tuesday. “

“Another suspicion is that he may have suffered an injury before Sunday’s fight,” said Mabaso-Dlamini. “It could be injuries building up all the years. His condition deteriorated when he was rushed to the hospital. But he was worse on his arrival at the hospital than when he left Greyville.”

Sadly, on Wednesday, it was confirmed that he had passed away.

“It is with great sadness for Boxing South Africa and the Buthelezi family to announce the passing away of Mr. Simiso Buthelezi who passed away last night the 7th June 2022 at hospital in Durban,” read a statement.

“Boxing South Africa will conduct an independent medical review of the injury and will then make public the results of that medical review.

“The Buthelezi family and Boxing South Africa acknowledges warm words of condolences of the Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture.

“The Buthelezi family and Boxing South Africa will in due course make announcement on funeral arrangements. Boxing South Africa and the Buthelezi family wishes to request members of the public and the media to give them space while mourning the passing away of this great boxer who was exemplary both outside and inside the ring.”

Tributes have flooded in for the young boxer:

His trainer Bheki Mngomezulu previously said the incident was quite inexplicable.

“There wasn’t anything untoward in the fight and in training. He was leading the fight on points before the unfortunate incident occurred,” Mngomezulu said, as quoted by Sport24.

“I really can’t explain what happened to be honest. It was bewildering, but in his training and in the build-up to the fight, there was nothing untoward with regards to his condition.

“He was in good nick before the fight.”
