South African boxer Moruti Mthalane has officially retired from the game, and he has no intention to return to the ring in the future.

Mthalane’s final fight was against Diomel Diocos of Phillippines at the Pietermaritzburg City Hall on Sunday, and it came just a week before his 40th birthday.

In retiring from the sport, the KwaZulu-Natal-born boxer has brought to an end a career which spanned for 22 years.

Mathalane, a two-time former IBF flyweight world champion, quits the ring with 40 wins and just three defeats during his two-decades long boxing career.

In fact, it was his impressive start to his boxing career that caught the eye of many as he went 14 fights without a defeat from his first ever bout with Wiseman Mnguni on 19 December 2000.

The former IBO flyweight champ’s first defeat came at the hands of Nkqubela Gwazela on 24 September 2004 in a bout for the WBC International and South African flyweight titles.

MORUTI MTHALANE QUITS BOXING WITH DECORATED CAREER

“I think I’m 100 percent sure. It’s not like it’s something that came yesterday, I sat down and decided, ‘No, I think it’s my last day in boxing as a boxer,’” said Mthalane after his fight in Maritzburg.

“First of all, I’d like to thank everyone who came here to support me. It was a successful tournament, with the last fight of my career. So, I’m very happy. Thanks, South Africa, special people from KZN, I’m very happy that they came in numbers to support me,” added Mthalane.
