Cape Town City coach Benni McCarthy is likely not to be present when his side takes on Orlando Pirates on Wednesday night.

The Citizens are set to square off against the last team the legendary striker turned out for before retirement, with the match at Orlando Stadium kicking off at 19:30.

Benni McCarthy’s wife admitted to hospital

According to Cape Town City chairman John Comitis, McCarthy did not travel to Johannesburg with the team, due to family commitments.

“Benni’s wife is not well,” he told KickOff.

“She has been admitted to hospital with a collapsed lung.

“We understand his situation, and our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.”

City looking to get back to winning ways

Cape Town City are currently languishing at the bottom half of the PSL log in 12th place, following their 4-1 home defeat to Kaizer Chiefs over the weekend, which was their second in their league campaign, having last tasted league victory in their season opener against Supersport United back in August.

They will also be missing a key player in Taariq Fielies, who was controversially sent off against Amakhosi, but have been boosted by the return of playmaker Thabo Nodada, who has recovered from an injury sustained earlier in the season.

McCarthy – who is likely to be replaced by assistant coach Vasili Manousakis in the dugout for the Orlando Pirates clash – recently revealed that he was contemplating a different approach for the game.

“When you suffer four goals, it isn’t very mentally easy for goalkeepers to take. So maybe just change our approach a little bit tactically.”
