SPOTLIGHT ON RACE WALKING

Competitive race walking is much more than just putting one foot in front of the other. The sport prioritises precision and discipline and has been in the Olympics since 1904.

Unlike runners who often have both feet off the ground, especially when sprinting, race walkers must always have one foot in contact with the ground as visible to the human eye. Judges are present at events to ensure the rule is enforced.

Visible contact is anything slower than 0.6 seconds on the ground and if contact isn’t seen or is too rapid it is deemed as ‘lifting’ and attracts a penalty.

In addition, the athlete’s knee of the leg in front must not bend and the leg must straighten as the body passes over it. Knee bends also incur penalties. Too many penalties can lead to elimination.

Race walking indoor events have events in 3000m and 5000m. Outdoor events are contested at 5000m, 10 000m, 20 000, and 50 000m.
