Health MEC on the SHOOTING at Brits Hospital

North West Health MEC Madoda Sambatha visited the Brits hospital on Wednesday after a 39-year-old nurse was gunned down.

HEALTH MEC SAYS THE INCIDENT SHOCKED FAMILY AND STAFF

Sambatha says that it was a gruesome experience and that it came as a shock to the family and staff members. The Health MEC also said that support and counselling have been offered to the hospital management.

“Thanks to the hospital management who acted swiftly to provide counselling and support. I believe the police and other law enforcement agencies will not let the family down but will ensure that justice is served.”

WOMAN KILLED AFTER HER SHIFT

Carol Anne Magalies was killed during a shooting in the Brits Hospital parking lot on Sunday.

The 49-year-old receptionist was killed just moments after finishing her shift, by her ex-boyfriend. He fled the scene on foot and went to a bush along Marine Drive where he found a place to stay for the night. The suspect, identified as 51-year-old Elgin Maghienda, took his own life the next day.

Janse van Rensburg says detective work led to the arrest of a man who allegedly drove Maghienda to the crime scene and helped to escape. The accomplish was arrested in Kensington on Monday and he had his vehicle confiscated.

He will also be charged with murder and is expected to appear in the local magistrate’s court on Wednesday.

“The suspect is said to have apprehended himself to the police and is currently detained. The matter has been handed over to the South African Police Service (SAPS) for further investigations,” Health MEC Sambatha said.
