Zuma fraud and corruption trial postponed to August

The fraud and corruption trial against Zuma was postponed to 15 August in the High Court in Pietermaritzburg.

ZUMA MADE A BRIEF APPEARANCE IN COURT ON MONDAY

Zuma made a brief appearance in court on Monday morning for the instalment of the long-running arms deal trial.

“Per agreement, this matter is adjourned to 15th August 2023 for the hearing of Mr Zuma’s second application for the removal of Mr Downer state council as prosecutor in the criminal trial. That application is set to run for two days, that is 15th and 16th August 2023,” said Judge Nkosinathi Chili, according to Atchison Globe.

CLAIMS OF DOWNER LEAKING HIS MEDICAL INFORMATION

In September last year, he served Downer and Karyn with orders to appear in court for a private prosecution.

Zuma claims that Maughan and Downer leaked and published confidential medical records, breaching the National Prosecuting Authority Act (NPA).

The Pietermaritzburg High Court heard arguments from lawyers of Downer, Maughan, and Zuma on Monday. Downer and Maughan want the high court to review and set aside the application.

Advocate Geoff Budlender, representing Downer said that “this prosecution is an abuse of process because it is instituted for the delay, it is part of the strategy that was announced in 2007 by Zuma’s counsel.”

Maughan claims that he is abusing the court process to intimidate, harass and bully her to prevent her from reporting on his corruption case any further, as previously reported.

She listed three reasons why the case should be postponed. One is to point out the fact that he did not obtain a nolle prosequi certificate against her.
