Teenager allegedly raped after leaving hospital

A teen, later confirmed to be a psychiatric patient, told officers that she was raped after she fled from a hospital in Verulam

An 18-year-old woman was found sitting on Champion Street in Verulam, KwaZulu-Natal, on Tuesday, 28 January; she told officers that she was raped.

The teen said that she fled from the hospital, and after this, she was raped.

Teen leaves the hospital without telling anyone

Residents contacted Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) at 14:53 after being informed of the incident by the teenager.

Reaction Officers interviewed the woman upon arrival. She said she had been admitted to Osindisweni Government Hospital for a week for a medical condition.

She went on to say that she left the hospital on Monday night without telling anyone.

Offers told that she was allegedly raped by an older man

The teen told officers that she met an older man who took her to his house and raped her.

She left his house on Tuesday morning and has been wandering the streets since. She was carrying a bag containing eastern clothing.

The teen could not provide contact information for her family.

Officers contacted Osindisweni Government Hospital but were told they had no knowledge of a woman who had self-discharged or fled the previous night.

Soon after, the Verulam SAPS arrived and confirmed that the woman was a psychiatric patient admitted to Osindisweni Government Hospital by police yesterday.
