Two suspects have been arrested, and two firearms recovered after a high-speed chase that started in Ottawa, KwaZulu-Natal and ended in Phoenix on Wednesday, 18 January 2023.

Police call for backup after witnessing armed robbery

Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) received a call from a police officer stationed at the Verulam SAPS requesting assistance after witnessing a robbery at the intersection of R102 and Tottenham Road (Parkgate).

When the suspects realized they were being watched by the cop, they abandoned the robbery. 

They fled in a silver VW Polo in the direction of Phoenix.

All available Reaction officers were dispatched to assist the SAPS Officer on the armed gang’s trail.

Robbers crash their car during high-speed chase 

After failing to negotiate a bend leading off the southbound lane of the R102 heading into Phoenix, the robbers crashed their vehicle.

The three suspects dispersed and fled into the dense bush on opposite sides of the road.

Reaction officers encircled the area and conducted a coordinated search.

The RUSA R44 Helicopter took off to assist in pursuing the fleeing suspects.

The aircraft hovered above the trees as the pilot and crew kept an eye on the situation.

One of the armed robbers employed at e-hailing company 

Reaction officers apprehended the first suspect approximately 1.2 kilometers west of the crash site.

His accomplice was apprehended by a second team of RUSA Members around 900 meters east of the scene.

During an interview, one of the men revealed to officers that he was from Lusikisiki in the Eastern Cape.

He enlisted the help of one of the suspects from Hammersdale, KwaZulu-Natal, in the robbery.

The second suspect said he worked as a driver for an e-hailing company.

He claimed he committed the robbery due to peer pressure while driving a company VW Polo.

He went on to say that they followed the truck delivering boxes of chips to Tongaat stores.

They forced the vehicle off the road and held up the driver as they approached Ottawa.

When the Police Officer noticed them, they were in the process of breaking the safe.

The vehicle contained two firearms, cable ties, counterfeit notes, and a hammer.
