COVID-19: SA records more than 23k cases, positivity increases to 34,9%

South Africa recorded more than 23 000 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday. KZN (22%) and the Western Cape (13%) are closing the gap on Gauteng (36%) as the most affected province.

South Africa recorded more than 23 000 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, 14 December, according to the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD). The 68 437 tests conducted over the past 24 hours represent a positivity rate of 34,9 percent.

SA ADDS 23 884 NEW COVID-19 CASES

The 23 884 new COVID-19 cases detected in South Africa on Tuesday brings the total number of active cases in the country to 170 900. Unfortunately, 24 more people died of COVID-19-related complications, according to the NICD, bringing the death toll to 90 172.

There were 599 people admitted to hospital for COVID-19 treatment within the latest testing cycle. The 258 private and 407 public hospitals reporting to the NICD now have 6895 patients admitted.

“The proportion of positive new cases/total new tested today is 34,9% which is higher than yesterday (31,0%). The 7-day average is 27,2% today, which is higher than yesterday (25,8 %),” said the NICD.

PROVINCIAL BREAKDOWN

The majority of the cases identified on Monday were found in Gauteng (36%), followed by KwaZulu-Natal with 22 percent and the Western Cape with 13 percent.

The Eastern Cape accounted for 7 percent and the Free State and North West each accounted for 6 percent, respectively.

Mpumalanga (5%), Limpopo (3%) and the Northern Cape (1%) rounded off the list on Tuesday.

  • Eastern Cape – 1744 cases (606);
  • Free State – 1409 cases (647);
  • Gauteng – 8685 cases (6711);
  • KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) – 5205 cases (2715);
  • Limpopo – 767 cases (328);
  • Mpumalanga – 1108 cases (617);
  • North West – 1453 cases (713);
  • Northern Cape – 333 cases (191);
  • Western Cape – 3180 cases (1464); and
  • Unallocated – 0 cases.
