Woolworths under fire for display that looks like it mimicked slavery

Why did nobody suggest that this might be a little bit silly to leave incomplete installations around when they could look like something completely different?

Woah. Do people not stop and think?

A customer complained on Woolworths’ Facebook page that the mannequins tied together with rope resembles slavery.

Woolies responded swiftly, saying: “WOOLWORTHS SA Our store installation team have just got back to us, the ropes are supposed to support Christmas baubles and have been used incorrectly. We’re going to rectify the problem as fast as we can. We’re so sorry this caused any distress. Thanks so much for bringing the problem to our attention, we really appreciate it.”

Mvusiwekhaya Sicwetsha, who originally posted the image, said that these displays were up in a number of Woolworths stores. Woolies said that these displays have no been removed from all stores. Some users have said they would like to see how the displays were supposed to look, but the retailer said they will no longer be using these displays.

“We have decided to rather remove the ropes from all our stores instead, as it has caused too much distress. We’re so sorry about this mistake.”
