Poachedrhino.org takes students from a local children’s charity to Aquila Private Game Reserve

On 2 May 2015 PoachedRhino.org, with a donation from The St. James’s Place Foundation (UK) and in conjunction with The KusasaProject.org (local children’s charity) took 14 local Scholars ( chosen by Kusasa) on a three hour educational trip to Aquila Private Game Reserve (Western Cape). The scholars (between the ages of 13-17 year old) were treated to a three hour field trip to learn about the big five, conservation, flora and fauna.

We are hoping that the scholars will be inspired to pursue a career in conservation, or become a vet, or a game warden and also to better understand why our rhinos are being poached. We are also looking at a project to build a ‘Rhino orphanage’ and a ‘School of Excellence’ where the children will be able to continue their higher education with the emphasis on ‘Conservation’. We are also looking at the feasibility of an exchange programme with children in the UK.

The local children were provided with transport via Kusasa (and accompanied by Sintu ( driver) and Kirsten ( teacher from Franschhoek High School)and they received bags, pens , lunch, drinks and educational brochures from Poachedrhino.org. After the event all the children said it was great day and a trip of a lifetime! It is such a shame that local children do not get the chance of seeing the ‘Big 5’ in their own country, especially when it is on their own doorstep.

At least 14 children have now had the wonderful opportunity thanks to kind donations from the UK.
