Zuma might only have to pay back one million Rand for Nkandla

According to the Sunday Times Zuma won’t have to pay back much more than a million of the R246 million of the taxpayer’s money spent on his private digs.

The Constitutional Court in March ruled that Zuma acted in contravention to the Constitution when he refused to act on the Public Protector’s report. It took the highest court in the land to force the president to abide by the law, but even so he’ll likely get away with paying a pittance.

The National Assembly – against which the ConCourt also ruled as the ANC-controlled house led by ANC national chair Baleka Mbete decided on their own that the Public Protector’s finding against Zuma were not binding – now has to determine “the reasonable costs that Zuma must pay for the upgrades”, the ConCourt ruled.

Wim Trengrove, the EFF’s advocate, said that Zuma would only have to pay “to the extent to which he had been enriched”.

“He shouldn’t pay for the wasteful expenditure incurred by the state, because it is not his fault,” he said.

Now, since almost all of the R246 million of your tax money was wasted by the state and didn’t directly benefit Zuma, he’s not liable for most of the cash…
