Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini KaBhekuzulu will be buried during a private Royal Family service on Thursday and the official memorial service will be broadcast from the palace to the public the government has announced.

Government spokesperson Phumla Williams said in a statement on Tuesday that the burial would  be a private Royal Family service

The official memorial service will take place at the KwaKhethaomthandayo Royal Palace in Nongoma on Thursday, 18 March 2021, starting at 10am.

Zulu King Zwelithini died in the early hours of Friday 12 March after an extended illness. Zulu warriors in traditional attire uplifted his body from Albert Luthuli Hospital and transported it to Nongoma on Saturday. President Cyril Ramaphosa ordered that the national flag at all stations should be flown at half-mast from Saturday 13 March and that the King Zulu should be accorded a Special Official Funeral Category 1 with military honours.

“The memorial service will be broadcast live on the SABC and other major broadcast channels,” Williams said.,

“These measures are also to assist those who may not be able to physically attend the funeral due to the current COVID-19 lockdown level 1 regulations which stipulate that gatherings for funerals may not exceed hundred (100) people,” Williams said.

“Government wishes to advise anyone who would like to send a message of condolence to the Royal Family, to the Zulu nation, and to the people of KwaZulu-Natal and beyond to utilise the e-condolence book available on: condolences@gcis.gov.za,” she said.

Zulu King Zwelithini reigned for 50 years and was the longest serving Zulu King. He took the throne in 1971 at the age of 21, acceding his father King Cyprian Bhekuzulu kaSolomon.
