Five zama zamas arrested after shootout with police in Boksburg
Two illegal miners were injured in the shootout with police in Main Reef Road, Boksburg on Friday. The five suspects were found in possession of unlicensed firearms.

Two alleged illegal miners (zama zamas) were wounded in a shootout with police in Boksburg, Gauteng, on Friday, 23 September. The clash came after the police conducted an intelligence-driven operation in the area.
FIVE ZAMA ZAMAS ARRESTED AFTER SHOOTOUT
South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Sello said a multidisciplinary team followed up on information about illegal miners who were allegedly in possession of unlicensed firearms.
“Upon approaching the said place in Main Reef road in Boksburg, the alleged miners started firing shots at the police, causing the members to retaliate,” said Sello.
Five suspects were arrested, including two who sustained injuries in the shootout. The police also seized R5 and hunting rifle ammunition and found a shotgun that was linked to a house robbery case in Klerksdorp.
The five illegal miners are expected to appear before court imminently on charges of possession of unlicensed firearms. The investigation continues.
The multidisciplinary team consisted of Crime Intelligence, Ekurhuleni Trio Task Team, Ekurhuleni Tactical Response Team, Gauteng Traffic, EMPD, Emergency Medical Service and private security companies, said Sello.
