Youth Month: Celebrating a brilliant future leader

A true champion!

Youth Day

With June being Youth Month and Youth Day coming up on Saturday 16 June, various governments, groups and companies are looking to celebrate some of the finest youth SA has to offer. Trinisha Lutchmiah is one of those.

Lutchmiah grew up in Merebank, Durban and later moved to Malvern when she was eight years old.

She attended Nizam Road Primary and Malvern Primary before going on to Queensburgh Girls’ High, from which she matriculated with a Bachelors pass.

Growing up in a house full of aunties and cousins, Lutchmiah was certainly never short of company. She took all that energy and support and went on to become the first family member to graduate from a tertiary institution.

While she was at high school, Lutchmiah joined Engen’s Maths and Science Schools (EMSS) According to her, the classes gave her all the motivation she needed to keep studying.

“Education was always a priority in our household and I think that is why I have not stopped pursuing my studies. I found out about Engen Maths and Science Schools when my father was working at Engen, and since I previously lived in Merebank, I had family and friends who told me about the EMSS.”

“EMSS gave me a greater understanding in Maths and Physics and exposure to their practical applications. I also enjoyed the English classes as we had a particularly charismatic teacher who gave the books we were studying so much more life.”

Lutchmiah was offered an Engen bursary in 2014 and went on to complete her degree in Property Development at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

That certainly wasn’t the end of it. She obtained her honours in Construction Management a few years later and is currently studying towards her Master’s Degree.

The people at Engen were so impressed by her, they ended up offering her a job in Retail Property Development at their regional office in Johannesburg.

“I was once told that a life lived for others is a life well lived and I wholeheartedly agree. You need to be the change you wish to see in the world.”
