The young man was covered from head to toe in a blanket of bees. He got stuck in the harness and was no match for the angry killer swarm.

A young man was stung around 20 000 times and ingested about 30 bees in a horror killer bee attack.

THE YOUNG MAN IS STILL IN HOSPITAL

The man, Austin Bellamy, 20, is expected to recover. He climbed a lemon tree last month to help a friend trim its branches before he accidentally cut into a bee nest. His mother, Shawna Carter, posted in an online fundraiser. Carter wrote her son was harnessed in the tree when the attack took place and could not get down.

The attack happened in Union Township in Brown County, about 50 miles southeast of Cincinnati.

HE WAS HARNESSED IN A TREE AND COULD NOT GET DOWN

The Ripley Fire Department, who also responded, told USA TODAY its fire Chief Tony Pfeffer and Capt. Donnie Koewler had to cut the man out of the tree.

This reminds us of the horrific bee attack in KwaZulu-Natal last year.

LAST YEAR SEVERAL PEOPLE AND PARAMEDICS WERE ATTACKED BY BEES IN KZN

Several people, including paramedics, were injured when a swarm of bees attacked them in Brindhaven.

According to Reaction Unit SA (RUSA) spokesperson Prem Balram, they had received multiple calls from Brindhaven residents reporting people screaming for help. Reaction Officers arrived on Rosemary drive and found a swarm of bees attacking several people who fled into a nearby bush.

Balram said three paramedics and two reaction officers who attempted to assist the injured were stung repeatedly.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU ARE STUNG SEVERAL TIMES?

According to ER24’s South Metro branch manager Heinrich Africa, an allergic reaction is a hypersensitive reaction that occurs when your immune system responds abnormally to common substances such as bee venom.

“Anaphylactic shock is the term given to describe an abnormal heightened response to the antigen for example, bee venom.

“Once the antigen is identified by the immune system, it launches an exaggerated response and there is often a linked respiratory component. Severe cases require rapid medical intervention to prevent death,” Africa said.

He explained that minor allergic reactions could be treated with an antihistamine, but anaphylaxis needs to be treated with adrenaline, which can be in the form of an Epi-Pen (which lay people can administer) and broncho-dilatory medications. Adrenaline is a natural hormone released in response to stress.

“When it is injected into the thigh muscle or administered via an intravenous drip, it works rapidly to reduce throat swelling, open up the airways and maintain heart function and blood pressure,” said Africa.

WHAT TO DO WHEN BEES ATTACK?

  • If this happens, try to run away from the swarm – in a straight line – as quickly as possible.
  • Head for shelter – whether it’s a car, tent, or building – and try to cover your exposed skin (especially your face) with clothing, towels, or blankets. Do not jump into the water to escape. The bees will wait at the surface longer than you can hold your breath.
  • If you’ve suffered multiple stings, consult a doctor as soon as you can. Signs of a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis), such as difficulty breathing, are a medical emergency.
