A call line has been dedicated for people to tip off authorities and has been named the informant reward system by the City of Cape Town.

The reward was initially R1 000 but this has been increased

The system was initially established by the City’s safety and security directorate. Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security JP Smith says the line has been set up to make sure that tips for rewards are channelled in the correct manner.

“The City’s Safety and Security Directorate formulated the Informant Reward Policy in 2013. The concept is that a reward is payable to any person who provides information that leads to an arrest or the successful confiscation or recovery of stolen goods or contraband,”

said Smith.

The reward that was initially promised was R1 000 but that has been increased to R5 000. According to Smith, the system was put in place to help the City of Cape Town’s law enforcement agencies.

He explained that recently, more departments within the City have been facing issues with theft and the vandalism of essential infrastructure which prompted them to start using the new reward system.

How does one make an anonymous tip-off in Cape Town and when does the money get paid out?

“It is for this reason that we have decided to establish a dedicated number for these tips for reward to streamline the process of following up on tips. Residents can report crime and by-law offences anonymously, 24 hours a day, on 0800 110077. The system is not open to people under the age of 18 or City of Cape Town employees,”

said Smith.

In terms of the payment of a reward, Smith explains that it can only be paid out if the policing resources achieve a result that directly relates to the information received. This includes the recovery of stolen goods, confiscation of contraband, confiscation of illegal firearms, the rescue of a kidnapped victim or arrests.

After a tip is made, it is relayed to the relevant law enforcement agency. If an arrest/confiscation is made an application for consideration by the Rewards for Information Committee will be submitted.

Smith added that it may take weeks or months after the arrest/confiscation etc for a reward to be paid out – it can only be done once all relevant administrative processes have been completed, reports IOL.
