UPDATE:

NYALARA FACES 31 CHARGES

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila said Nyalara is facing 31 charges, including 18 counts of murder, attempted murders, illegal possession of a firearm, illegal possession of ammunition and dealing and possession of drugs.

“He abandoned his right to bail and his case was postponed to 18 August 2022,” said Ntabazalila.

The State is likely to add charges as the investigation continues, said the NPA spokesperson.

According to the charge sheet seen by The South African, the State alleges that Nyalara is a prominent member of a criminal gang whose activities range from extortion of informal businesses in Khayelitsha.

The gang allegedly commits violent acts in order to spark fear in the owners of informal businesses and extort them.

The gang “also aimed at violently eliminating competing criminal gangs/gang members also engaged in extortion of this nature.”

All the murders and attempted murders the accused is charged with were carried out in Khayelitsha. One of the counts – related to drugs – allegedly took place in Bothasig, Cape Town. According to the State, Nyalara committed the crimes between 15 May 2021 and 30 June 2022.

According to SAPS, Nyalara’s crime spree began in Cape Town in 2016 with a business robbery. He is wanted for allegedly committing the aforementioned crimes between 2018 and 2022 as well as a cash-in-transit heist in Libode, Eastern Cape in 2018.

This is a developing story.
