KWAZULU-NATAL MAN ARRESTED FOR MASS MURDER

South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo said Xolani Mavela was arrested on 6 June 2022.

The Organised Crime and Special Investigations Unit and members of the Tracking Task Team in KwaZulu-Natal traced him to his business premises in U Section, Umlazi.

The police allege that Mavela and another suspect entered a home in Zamani informal settlement, Umlazi while the victims – aged between 24 and 35 – were asleep and opened fire on them.

“A case docket, which included six counts of murder and one attempted murder, was opened at the Umlazi police station for investigation,” said Ngcobo.

Mavela was remanded in custody by the local Magistrate’s Court until 15 June. He is expected to make a formal bail application at his next court appearance.
