Marvel used Xhosa for the Wakandan language in Captain America: Civil War

This is pretty awesome and means we’re likely to see Xhosa being spoken in the solo Black Panther film in the near future.

Marvel used Xhosa for the Waka

If you’ve been to watch Captain America: Civil War, you probably noticed that the language spoken by Black Panther (T’Challa) sounds a bit familiar.

That’s because it is. Black Panther speaks Xhosa.

“The language we used for Wakandan is called Xhosa,” Civil War co-director Joe Russo said to EW.

The influence came from John Kani, the actor who plays Black Panther’s father. Kani is from the Eastern Cape in South Africa and has performed all around the world. Kani actually taught Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther) how to speak it.

This decision is a biggie. Captain America: Civil War sets Black Panther up for his own movie. That means we’re likely to see Xhosa being spoken by T’Challa and his alter ego during the solo flick.

Marvel’s first Black Panther film is currently in development over at the studio, withCreed’s Ryan Coogler taking on both directing and co-writing duties.
