A 21-year-old man from Birmingham, England was sentenced to 25 years imprisonment by the city’s crown court after he pleaded guilty to the attempted murder of a newborn baby. Jamar Bailey tried to kill a three-week-old baby girl with prescription drugs.

TRACES OF DRUG FOUND IN MILK BOTTLE

Bailey was arrested in June 2020  on suspicion of harming a child after the baby was taken to hospital after becoming “listless and unresponsive,” according to reports.

Tests conducted at the hospital detected that the infant had sodium valproate in her urine. The drug is used to treat epilepsy and bipolar disorder and can be fatal if ingested by newborns, according to BBC News.

The police’s investigation found that Bailey used Google to look up “how to poison a baby” and “how to kill a newborn.” Detectives also found that he was taking medication for seizures. A prescription for Epilim Chrone, which contains sodium valproate, was found in his name during a search of his property, according to The Independent.

Toxicology tests found evidence of the drug in the baby’s milk bottle.

BAILEY PLEADS GUILTY

Bailey, who is from Winson Green, Birmingham, pled guilty to the attempted murder of the baby girl in June 2021 and was eventually jailed by the Birmingham Crown Court for 25-and-a-half years Monday, 25 October.

“The little girl is so lucky to be alive and we are really pleased that she is doing so well. Bailey’s actions were premeditated and could quite easily have resulted in her death,” said Detective Sergeant Kirsty Wilson of the West Midlands Police.

“Our investigation was complex and relied on medical evidence and the support of partner agencies, so we are satisfied that justice has been done,” added Wilson.

Bailey will be eligible to apply for parole after serving two-thirds of his sentence.
