CNN’s Chief International Correspondent Christiane Amanpour has announced she has been diagnosed with ovarian cancer.

“Like millions of women around the world, I’ve been diagnosed with ovarian cancer,” Amanpour said on Twitter.

“I’ve had successful major surgery to remove it and am now undergoing several months of chemotherapy for the very best long term prognosis.”

The 63-year-old renowned journalist boasts a career spanning four decades and gained prominence for her work covering war-torn hotspots throughout the world and for her interviews with world leaders.

Amanpour hosts her nightly news programme titled Amanpour on CNN and had taken some time off on air. Her cancer revelation was made on her first time returning on air following a four-week break to attend to her health.

“I’m telling you this in the interest of transparency, but in truth really mostly as a shoutout to early diagnosis. To urge women to educate themselves on this disease; to get all the regular screenings and scans that you can; to always listen to your bodies; and of course, to ensure that your legitimate medical concerns are not dismissed or diminished.”
