Worker crushed to death when wall collapsed in La Lucia

Police said a worker was crushed and five others were injured when a wall collapsed at a residence in the La Lucia area.

A worker was crushed to death, and five others were injured when a wall collapsed at a residence in the La Lucia area.

WHAT HAPPENED BEFORE THE INCIDENT?

Police said several emergency services responded to a report of a structural collapse in the La Lucia area.

The incident happened around 14:05 on Monday afternoon.

“A team of contractors was working at a residential property conducting renovations. An iron beam with a brick facia was being installed when it collapsed onto the workers.”

Police said responders could extricate four of the workers.

THE INJURED WERE TREATED ON THE SCENE

“The workers were treated for moderate to serious injuries sustained by the collapse. They were stabilised on the scene before being transported to the hospital by various ambulance services.”

It furthermore said a search for a trapped worker was conducted amongst the rubble and debris.

THE BODY OF MAN WAS RETRIEVED FROM RUBBLE

The worker was found but was unfortunately declared dead on the scene by paramedics.

“The body of the worker was retrieved from the rubble and handed over to members from Durban North SAPS,” it said.

According to Netcare911 spokesperson, Shawn Herbst paramedics assessed the scene and found that one worker had sustained fatal injuries and was sadly declared deceased on the scene.

“Two other men had sustained critical injuries and were treated on scene by advanced life support paramedics. Three other workers sustained minor injuries,” he said.

Herbst said once stabilised, all the patients were transported on Monday afternoon to the hospital for further care.

Police said an inquest docket has been opened and will be investigated.
