Woman trapped in car burns to death in Mpumalanga collision

The woman was trapped in the car when it caught fire after she collided in a truck at 50/50 crossing in Mpumalanga on Saturday night.

A woman died in a collision that set her car in flames, burning her to death inside in Mpumalanga.


The woman of unknown age got into a collision at the intersections of R547 and R580, also known as 50/50 crossing, in the south of Kriel.

The incident happened on Saturday night, ER24 spokesperson Ross Campbell said.

“The light motor vehicle the woman was driving collided with a truck and then caught fire.”

ER24 paramedics arrived at the scene at 19h46 along with the Secunda Fire Department.

The car was found ablaze on the road and was subsequently extinguished by the Fire Department, Campbell said.

“Unfortunately, the woman was entrapped in the burning car, had already succumbed to her injuries. She was declared dead on arrival by ER24.”

The truck driver however survived the accident unscathed.

“The traffic department, as well as the South African Police Service, were on the scene for further investigations,” Campbell said.

In a separate accident, a woman was killed and five others were injured when a bakkie they were travelling in overturned.

This happened in Osindisweni, KwaZulu-Natal, on Saturday morning, Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) said.

Members of RUSA arrived on the scene at approximately 03h58. They located a severely damaged white Nissan Hardbody bakkie several metres down a steep embankment, RUSA said.

“According to onlookers, four occupants of the vehicle were transported to hospital while one female was pronounced dead at the scene by medics.”

A woman who was on her way to a river for prayer in the bakkie, witnessed as the driver lost control.

“Passengers seated in the rear were ejected as the bakkie overturned while travelling down a steep embankment. One of the injured was an 11-year-old girl,” RUSA said.

The 24-year-old woman however suffered minor injuries and was transported to hospital by ambulance.
