Woman held captive, raped for over 24 hours in Newlands Forest

It reads like something from an episode of CSI, but a Cape Town woman’s capture and subsequest rape in Newlands Forest is very real.

Imagine going for a run in one of the most picture-perfect spots in Cape Town, only to be abducted, raped and held captive.

That’s exactly what happened to a 28 year-old woman who was attacked while jogging in the Newlands Forest on Tuesday evening.

The woman managed to escape after more than a day.

“A 28-year-old female was attacked by a suspect on Tuesday evening in Newlands Forest, held captive and raped in an isolated area. She managed to escape last night and reported the incident to the police,” said Andre Traut of the Cape Town police.

She eventually broke free and fled after her captor forced her to walk towards a garage and is currently recovering in hospital.

According to UCT the crime is very similar to previous attacks in the Rhodes Memorial vicinity – another rape at the university was reported earlier this week –, but the police say it’s too early to link this incident with others in the – immediate – area over the last week or so.
