KZN woman, 21, allegedly THREW child, 4, into a river

A 21-year-old KZN woman has appeared in court on charges of kidnapping and attempted murder for allegedly throwing a child into a river.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) says a 21-year-old woman has been arrested and charged. The woman allegedly threw a child into a river in Pietermaritzburg during this week.

The accused appeared in court

Spokesperson for the SAPS in KwaZulu-Natal Captain Nqobile Gwala says the woman appeared in court. The woman appeared before the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 19 May. She was in on charges of kidnapping and attempted murder.

What exactly happened to the child?

Gwala says a bystander allegedly noticed the four-year-old child wet and covered in mud. The child was walking alone before the bystander went to investigate. It is then that the bystander found the child had been abducted and thrown into a river/

“It is alleged by a bystander that she noticed a 4-year-old child wet and full of mud walking alone along Pant Road in Alexandra and went to investigate. On questioning the child, she found out the child was abducted by a known suspect who threw her into the river. Police were called and the suspect was later arrested,” said the SAPS spokesperson.

The child received medical attention

According to IOL, Mi7 National Group Spokesperson Colin David said paramedics were called. This followed information they received that the four-year-old had been found at the Dusi River.

David said the child received medical attention and was found to be in a stable condition. The matter was then handed over to social services.

In other news, a man who attempted to silence his rape victims with money was sentenced to two life terms on Wednesday, 18 May. The 31-year-old rapist tried to buy the silence of his victims with R10. He was sentenced by the Mankweng Regional Court in Limpopo.

The incidents occurred in Toronto, Mankweng. In 2017, the man lured the two children, who were playing in the street, into a house. He called each girl into the house on separate occasions. He promised to give them money.

After inviting them into the house, he would undress them before raping them, says Nationa Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi. Read the full story here.
