The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has published an update on the case involving the presidential spokesperson, Khusela Diko. The public official was put on special leave last year, after she was accused of benefiting from the illegal plundering of PPE equipment – and it seems that the Unit has been able to chase down at least one red flag.

Khusela Diko – latest news and updates

A statement, published by the office of the presidency on Sunday, reveals that the SIU is yet to find any ‘hard evidence’ that links Khusela Diko to two controversial contracts awarded by the Gauteng Health Department. It was initially believed that the Royal Bhaca company – owned by Diko’s husband – had illicity procured materials used to protect against COVID-19.

However, it would appear there is much more work to be done here – and the high-ranking representative of Ramaphosa is certainly not off the hook: Indeed, the SIU’s investigation has taken a fascinating turn.

President’s spokesperson ‘raises concerns’ with undeclared finances

In the published update, it has been revealed that Diko ‘failed to disclose her financial interests’ to the relevant authorities. She is set to face an internal disciplinary hearing, and her leave could be upgraded to an indefinite suspension:

“The SIU has so far not obtained any official evidence pointing to Khusela Diko’s involvement in the awarding of two contracts by the Gauteng Department of Health to Royal Bhaca or in respect of the irregularities identified in respect of such awards…”

“The SIU did, however, identify a concern regarding Ms. Diko’s duty to disclose all her financial interests. On the basis of a referral from the SIU on her failure to disclose her financial interests, the Presidency has decided to initiate an internal disciplinary process against Ms. Diko. Tyrone Seale will, for now, continue as the acting spokesperson for the President.”
