So, when does the land get expropriated? The EFF has reached a major milestone on Monday, and they finally have a mayor of their own.

The EFF will be celebrating a slice of history this evening, after their first-ever Municipal Mayor was elected to public office – some eight years after the party first formed. Selloane Motjeane will now run the rule over Metsimaholo in Free State, as the Red Berets got the better of the hung council.

Here’s where the first-ever EFF Mayor will govern

The EFF put in a respectable performance in this part of the province, finishing with over 25% of the vote. However, they only came third in Metsimaholo, trailing behind the DA and the ANC respectively. But, with their 12 council seats, the far-left party was able to play itself into a position of power.

For the very first time, a municipality in South Africa will be under EFF control. Their plethora of promises, including the acceleration of land expropriation and the improved provision of jobs, will now come under greater scrutiny.

Land and jobs for Metsimaholo?

The EFF has taken just under 1 000 council seats nationwide, but the dozen they picked up in Metsimaholo may be the most crucial of the bunch. Their electoral performance in 2021 was better than their last local elections in 2016, but when compared to the 2019 General Election, Julius Malema and his comrades actually lost support.

But this particular victory heralds a step in the right direction for the socialist campaigners – and Selloane Motjeane now has a chance to create history on behalf of her party.
