Angus Buchan: Pastor cancels Pretoria gathering after ‘race’ remarks

Staying true to his faith, Angus Buchan has asked for forgiveness after making racially-divisive comments last week, which lead to a clash with the EFF.

Pastor Angus Buchan has issued his sincere apologies to the people of South Africa for the second time this month, at a press conference alongside the Christian Leaders Forum. The divisive figure had upset a majority of citizens with comments he made ahead of a planned rally at the Loftus Rugby Stadium in Pretoria.

Who is Angus Buchan?

Buchan hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons last week, when he claimed that “only Afrikaaners and Jews” had a special bond with God. People of colour were incensed by the exclusionary comment, and things reached boiling point with EFF Secretary General Godrich Gardee.

The politician suggested the large-scale event in Pretoria should be “booby-trapped with limpet mines” – explosive devices that would likely kill anyone within close range if they were detonated. AfriForum have since pursued hate speech charges against Gardee, but Buchan hasn’t been let off the hook himself.

Posting a statement on his Facebook page shortly after the media briefing, Buchan begged the public for forgiveness and promised to use his influence to unite South Africans. He also confirmed that the mass prayer meeting at Loftus next year has been cancelled.

“I am very sorry for what has taken place, I apologise, I repent and I renounce the idea of any special nation. I therefore ask your forgiveness. I’m fully committed to supporting the authority which God has put in place, namely our President Cyril Ramaposa and his Government: we must obey and fully support the law.”

“I will therefore continue with all my heart to work towards bringing the entire nation of South Africa to unity with each other, and with our God. We have come a long way as a nation to be where we are today and my utterances and actions are sincerely regrettable.”

“Having met with the Christian Leaders Forum today I asked for forgiveness for the utterances I made and hereby repent. I have cancelled the planned meeting at the Loftus stadium in February next year. Once again, I ask you to forgive me for making a mistake that’s hurt so many people in our beautiful country.”
